The Other Grace (1)

Do we get to decide who we are, or are we only what our society tells us to be?  THE OTHER GRACE is a 100,000-word science fiction novel with flavors of contemporary women’s fiction, dystopian fiction, and at its heart, it is about a woman and her relationship as a mother and an abandoned wife.  There are no consequences to bad decisions if you can escape them by skidding to another reality, but in Grace’s world, the knowledge of how to skid has been lost, and people who choose to skid are instead secretly experimented on and “exited,” in a vein similar to Lois Lowry’s The Giver.  This female voice-driven narrative with the issues of identity at its core, has the personal and emotional stakes equal to Liane Moriarty’s What Alice Forgot.  THE OTHER GRACE is comfortable on a shelf beside Margarita Montimore’s Oona Out of Order, and with other novels which carry a vulnerable and poignant female character at its center.

Grace lives in a world where people can simply escape their bad decisions, choosing to “skid” to a new interdimension where they’ve chosen a different path.  Abandoned by her husband who skids irrevocably, Grace joins a group of dissidents learning every choice changes everything.  Meeting in secret due to society’s stricture against further study of the skid phenomena, Grace must experience her own alternate timeline to discover the truth of what happens to people who leave their lives this way or be forced to meet the same fate. THE OTHER GRACE is a journey to accept all the roads we have traveled, and ultimately choose the path we are already on.

“If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world.”

–C.S. Lewis
